Mount Mitchell Challenge and Black Mountain Marathon this Saturday!

The thirteenth annual Mt. Mitchell Challenge (40 Miler) and the Black Mountain Marathon will be held this Saturday in Western North Carolina. The Mt. Mitchell Challenge begins in Black Mountain, NC and runs to the top of Mt. Mitchell the highest point on the eastern seaboard at 6,684 ft. This race is TOUGH! Fueling your Body and Mind... Personal Health and Environmental Health

I watched FOOD INC again last night with some friends because I wanted to share the knowledge with them. After watching Food Inc we found another interesting documentary called THE BEAUTIFUL TRUTH which is a film about a little known treatment for cancer and other ailments called GERSON THERAPY. DR. GERSON discovered a way to cure cancer and other ailments through a strict diet which was rooted in organic food. He wrote two books about his case studies. He was poisoned and his first manuscript was stolen but he survived by treating himself with his own therapy. He rewrote the findings of his case study and was poisoned again but this time he perished. Similar to the giant food and agricultural corporations that try to control what we eat while simultaneously playing a huge role in destroying our environment, drug corporations and our medical establishment went to great lengths to repress the Gerson Therapy... including stealing his findings and killing Gerson!

What does all of this have to do with running? Everything! A line sticks out in mind from BORN TO RUN... the author is talking about SCOTT JUREK's and the Tarahumara diet and says that (I'm paraphrasing...) "Scott eats fruits, vegetables and whole grains. All of those things are easily digestible and provide the proper nutrition Scott needs. He is ready to run anytime, anywhere and any distance" (not sure about the any distance part but it sounds cool, right!?). While watching THE BEAUTIFUL TRUTH it struck me that the Gerson Therapy Diet is similar to a runner's diet and the dietary suggestions made in FOOD INC. Keep in mind that the Gerson Therapy is used to cure ailments so the diet is extreme but the benefits in the foundation are there.

Because of the effects of food on our health and the environment it is extremely important that our diet is predominately filled with FRUITS, VEGETABLES and WHOLE GRAINS... I hope I am preaching to the choir here... Go to farmer's markets, read labels, avoid saturated fat and processed foods, feel good and RUN! Remember your power as a consumer and demand healthy food and a healthy environment. RUN FOR HAITI! This weekend!

The New York Road Runner's has set up a 4 mile benefit race for Haiti and partnered with to allow anyone anywhere to compete virtually! 100% of the proceeds will go to Haiti relief. RUN FOR HAITI will take place in Central Park this Saturday, Feb. 20th. Some of the biggest names in running will be racing so you can see how you stack up against the greats! Grete Waitz, Haile Gebrselassie, Bill Rodgers, Ryan Hall, Meb Keflezighi, Deena Kastor, Dathan Ritzenhein and Shalane Flanaga will all be running! To date, Run for Haiti has raised $360,000.00! Born to Run Review

I finished reading BORN TO RUN last night (hence, the lack of posts last week!). I am a changed runner! The book takes an in-depth look at the life, culture and running style of the Tarahumara as well as other Ultrarunners. The Tarahumara live in the Copper Canyons in Mexico and are some of the worlds best long distance runners (ultramarathons). What makes this book great is the analysis of human biomechanics and running's role in our evolution that is woven through the stories of colorful characters (Caballo Blanco, Barefoot Ted, Jenn Shelton, Billy Barnet, Scott Jurek) and exceptional race vignettes (Leadville 100).
Born to Run spurred me to run longer distances and continue to dig deeper into my natural desire to run. It has made me question running shoes in general and inspired me to wear my very flat soled and minimally structured Asics Mexico 66 Onitsuka Tigers for a run on the treadmill the other night. It felt great!

Whether you're a veteran runner, a newbie, or haven't ran since PE in the 8th grade I would highly recommend reading Born To Run. This book will inspire you to connect with your inner runner... literally and figuratively. Connections are made between being a runner and an artist (specifically Beat Poets!). There is something natural, simple and mentally fulfilling about running and Born To Run illustrates those connections flawlessly.

Ever wanted to run 100 Miles on remote trails in Alaska?

Or bike? Or ski? ...You could have last weekend at the SUSITNA 100! The race starts 2 hrs away from ANCHORAGE and winds through Alaskan forest. The race directors say that you should enjoy the colors white and green because that it all you will see except for the blue sky. They also require you to carry certain gear which includes a 20 below sleeping bag. Here's the RACE RESULTS. Here's a link to a large collection of PHOTOS.

Marathon cancelled but that didn't stop a few hundred runners!

The Myrtle Beach Marathon logo turned out to be ironic this year considering that the race was cancelled due to ice and snow on the roads. Although the marathon was cancelled many runner's braved the ice, snow and cold temps to finish what they started! Race directors said that runner's who registered for the race will hopefully be receiving a partial refund and are guaranteed entry for next year's event at $15.

Stay Up-To-Date and Motivated with Weekly Race Results

Every Monday the Running Times website provides weekly race results. I have been enjoying checking the results out regularly during my training for the Big Sur Marathon. It's interesting and motivating to see what the pro's are doing. Also, even though Running Times is owned by Rodale Inc, the same company that owns Runner's World this magazine offers a great and perhaps more serious look at the running.

Two Marathons Too Many in Toronto

Running has become so popular that there is a fight... well, let's call it a "heated negotiation" going on between The Goodlife Fitness Toronto Marathon and Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon because of the dates that they are holding their marathons. However, the City Officials seem to be doing some instigating because both marathons have been coexisting for 20 years. The Toronto Marathon is scheduled for Sunday October 17th, 2010 and is in it's 33rd year. The Toronto Waterfront Marathon is scheduled for Sunday September 26th, 2010 and is in it's 21st year. The City wants Toronto to have one destination marathon. Although this "heated negotiation" puts an adverse spin on running and reminds us of the big business behind races, it also illustrates how much the sport, culture and running community has grown.

More is ALWAYS better...

Paul Williams, a runner who completed a marathon in 1988, is more importantly a scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and has been conducting a study on exercise for the past 20 years! His conclusion? More is always better! He focused his study mostly on runner's because we generally have a better documentation of our exercise schedule and it's results (races!). He's been a critic of the national guidelines advising Americans to get "at least" 30 minutes of exercise per day. His study revealed that while "at least" 30 minutes is good, more is still better.  Read the FULL ARTICLE.

Greg McMillan is an accomplished runner and an even more accomplished running coach. He has coached athletes in every Olympic Marathon Trial since 1996! Amby Burfoot, the editor of Runner's World magazine said, "Greg McMillan is one of the best and smartest distance-running coaches in America." Greg McMillan is a nice guy too, he shares his running knowledge and coaching skills with the world through his site, McMILLAN RUNNING.  His RUNNING CALCULATOR is more fun than video game! Also, be sure to check out his Non-Profit Post-Collegiate Elite Running Team at McMILLAN ELITE. They are based in Flagstaff, AZ and they run fast!
